Chronic Diseases and Conditions
What are chronic diseases and conditions?
Chronic diseases and conditions are long-term, usually lasting one year or more. They often require ongoing medical attention, can limit daily activities, and may get worse as time goes on. In the United States, chronic diseases are leading causes of illness, disability, and death. Yet many chronic diseases and conditions can be prevented, and the people who have them may be able to live longer, healthier lives. Research teams across CEAL are studying approaches to address some of the most common chronic diseases and conditions, including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, some cancers, and lung diseases such as asthma.
Why does CEAL’s focus include chronic diseases and conditions?
Chronic diseases can stem from a variety of sources, with genetic, lifestyle, environmental, and social factors all potentially in play. Across all of these categories, CEAL research teams engage communities in addressing the ongoing health challenges that most affect them. From promoting healthy behaviors to addressing social determinants of health, CEAL teams aim to create solutions shaped by local voices and designed to foster long-term improvements in health outcomes in communities across the country.
